Architecture for Art Opens in Hillsdale

Rural Intelligence ArtsMona Mark

Richard Meier, architect of the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, calls museums “cathedrals for our time,” a destination where the devout can gather to engage, not just their eyes, minds and souls, but each other. Now Hillsdale has a new gallery, Architecture for Art, whose mission is to feature artists whose work speaks to the buildings that contain it and to explore that dialogue, through exhibitions, lectures and videos of interviews with world-famous architects, and through exhibitions of architectural drawings and maquettes.

That the gallery is in a second-floor space over a wine store in a four-year-old quasi-colonial-style building is not at all troubling to Liane Nouri, the founder and director of Architecture for Art.  “It is a workable space that actually has enough square footage to design exhibitions,” she says. “That is what Architecture for Art is about—working art into spaces in a cohesive way, whether it is new architecture or an existing space.”

The gallery’s first show, which opens this Saturday, features the work of two artists and two architects—architect John Cleater, architect Grigori Fateyev, artist Jim Long, and artist Mona Mark.  There will also be a premier of the short film—a walk through The Bloch Building at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, with the architect who designed it, Steven Holl.

Architecture for Art began five years ago as a web site whose missions was to bring together artists, architects, collectors, curators, art students, and museum lovers to engage in the conversation about art and the space it lives in—whether it is a museum, gallery, private residence, or art out of doors. Now the dialogue about the museum and art experience has a center online and a presence at the gallery.
