Books: Millbrook Festival, Storytime for All

Rural Intelligence ArtsEveryone has long known the value of reading aloud to young children.  Now there is mounting evidence—the growing popularity of books on CD and entertainments such as staged play readings and, of course, NPR’s beloved “Selected Shorts”—that adults want and perhaps need to be read to as well.

This Saturday, May 15 on the front lawn of the Millbrook Free Library, the Millbrook Book Festival’s Reader’s Corner will present a new author every 15 minutes, who will read aloud from his or her most recent work.  First up, at 10 a.m., Joan Murray is scheduled to read from her novel-in-verse, Queen of the Mist, about the first person, a woman, to plunge over Niagara Falls in a barrel.  The readings run non-stop until 3:30 p.m.

But Reader’s Corner is just one feature of a rich and varied book lover’s program. There will be lunches with authors, programs for children, and popular speakers, such as the nationally known financial columnist, author, and commentator, Jane Bryant Quinn (above), author of Making the Most of Your Money NOW  and Smart and Simple Financial Strategies for Busy People.  Panel discussions, such one on the craft of writing and the current state of publishing moderated by literary agent Elizabeth Kaplan, are designed to inform would-be authors and give the rest of us who live in this community that is rife with writers, a more sophisticated grip on the challenges these neighbors face.

For a complete schedule, please visit the library’s website.
