Berkshire Bach at Great Barrington First Congregational Church

Saturday, December 11 @ 8 p.m.

Baritone Bradford Gleim, who has gained a reputation as a bit of a heartthrob in classical choral circles, is one of three featured vocalists to join the Berkshire Bach Society as their 20th anniversary season celebration, The Many Faces of Bach, continues. This Saturday it’s Bach at the Thomasschule, highlighting the work of J.S. Bach, the music schoolmaster; his scion J.C.F. Bach; and his admirer, Felix Mendelssohn. The concert features settings by all three composers of the Luthern hymn tune Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Wake up, the voice cries to us), which was written by Philipp Nicolai and was the basis for J.S. Bach’s Cantata 140. Also on the program is his Mein glaubiges Herze from Cantata BWV 68; Komm Jesu Komm from Cantata BWV 61; and O Menschen, die ihr täglich sündigt. Additional soloists include soprano Kristina Bachrach, tenor Daniel Molkentin, and keyboardist David Baranowski. Choral director Frank Nemhauser really does want the audience to “wake up” during these dark days of winter, so be prepared to lend your voice and sing along at parts of this rousing presentation. Students free with ID.
