Calliope: A Renaissance Revel at Helsinki
Saturday, November 20 @ 8 p.m.
The Berkshire-based, award-winning ensemble Calliope is known not only for performing early music on period instruments, but also for mixing it up, playing 20th-century jazz and swing on 15th-century musical antiquities, including the sackbut, vieille, tabor, and crumhorn. The New York Times has said they play “The sweetest dance music this side of 1250…subtle, delightful,” while the San Francisco Chronicle called them “A quartet whose scholarship is matched by an unerring sense of fun and entertainment.” They present their unique blend of music from the Renaissance through the jazz age in the second of the Columbia Festival Orchestra’s new ClaverackLanding series of classical music performed in an intimate nightclub setting.
