Carolina Chocolate Drops at Infinity Hall

Instant darlings of the NPR set upon the release of their 2010 recording, Genuine Negro Jig, the Carolina Chocolate Drops hark back to a tradition of African-American string bands that found success in the 1930s, most notably their namesake, the Tennessee Chocolate Drops. These three young, charismatic fiddlers sat at the formidable knees of old-time fiddler Joe Thompson to absorb his repertoire and short-bowing style, and launched into orbit from farmers’ markets to the festival circuit to A Prairie Home Companion, becoming the first black string band to play the Grand Ole Opry. Wherever they play, they bring down the house (as you can see in this video from their area debut last year at MASS MoCA) with their smart reinterpretations of Americana, presented with what Rolling Stone magazine has called “dirt-floor-dance electricity.”
