Composer Jorge Martin at Hudson Opera House

Last spring the Fort Worth Opera presented the world premiere of Before Night Falls, the first large-scale, full-length opera by Jorge Martin, Close Encounters with Music’s first composer-in-residence. If the title sounds familiar, perhaps you’ve seen Julian Schnabel’s 2000 film of the same name, which was based on the autobiography of Cuban novelist Reinaldo Arenas, who chronicled the persecution of gays under Fidel Castro. Cuban-born Martin, a U.S. resident since 1965, will talk about his work and illustrate the discussion with music and images from the opera.
