Cuban Rumba & Dance Group at MASS MoCA

Rural Intelligence ArtsOn their own, Jacob’s Pillow and MASS MoCA are formidable institutions with international reputations. So when they collaborate, you can always be assured that you are going to see an innovative, world-class performance.  On April 30 and May 1, they will jointly present Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, the Afro-Cuban folkloric music and dance group, at MASS MoCA’s Hunter Center.  Since its founding in 1999, MASS MoCA has co-presented performing arts programs with Jacob’s Pillow, including the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, MOMIX, Stephen Petronio Company, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, and Armitage Gone! Dance.

Rural Intelligence ArtsFounded in 1952, Los Muñequitos de Matanzas has been touring internationally since 1989 and received several Latin Grammy nominations. It is considered one of the world’s premier rumba groups. The New York Times has praised the troupe for its “spectacular sensual dancing and some of the most complex drumming to be heard in this hemisphere.”

“Los Munequitos has been away far too long and we are so happy to welcome back this beloved and respected troupe,” says Ella Baff, executive director of Jacob’s Pillow.  “They are the keepers and innovators of important traditions – the soul and spirit of Afro-Cuban dance and music. Expect to be uplifted; expect to feel like dancing.
