Dance: Pillow Tickets Now On-Line

With a powerful one-two-three punch, Jacob’s Pillow opens it’s 76th season.  Performances by the companies of legendary choreographers Garth Fagan (June 18 - 22) and Bill T. Jones (June 26 - 29; July 3 - 6), along with the lesser known (in this country) but intriguing Compagnie Heddy Maalem (June 25 - 29), a troupe of 14 African dancers who will re-interpret Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, begin a season of company debuts, world premieres, and exclusive programs.  In addition to ticketed events, there will be literally hundreds of free performances, classes, talks, and exhibits.

Other highlights throughout the summer include the hugely popular Ballet Boyz (July 16 - 20), David Michalek’s remarkable Slow Dancing (July 31 - August 3), Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet (July 23 - 27), and a double bill of “downtown” dancers (August 14 - 17), the up-and-coming Kate Weare performing the world premiere of Bridge of Sighs (developed at Jacob’s Pillow) and performance art phenom Maureen Fleming, who will do The Stairs, a stunning piece in which she descends a staircase very slowly on her back to the music of Phillip Glass.  Warning: This last may not be the occasion to treat you aged auntie to a decorous evening at “the ballet”—-there’s partial nudity involved.  In fact, given the broad range of programs being offered between June 18 and August 24 (300 in all; only one-third of which require tickets), it’s surprisingly difficult to pinpoint an evening for the sort of ballet lover who likes to play it safe.

On-line ticket ordering for non-members and non-subscribers begins on Monday, April 7.
