Elisabeth von Trapp & The Empire Brass at The Colonial

These hills are always alive with the sound of music, but in this season the music hints of sleighbells and angelic choruses, especially when performed by Elisabeth von Trapp, granddaughter of the ex-nun/nanny Maria and the Baron von Trapp, whose romance and flight from the Austrian Nazi regime was portrayed in a certain film we assume every reader has seen at least three times, and who settled in Vermont and set The Trapp Family Singers loose on the United States. Elisabeth carries on the family tradition as a globe-trotting performer whose repertoire ranges from Gregorian chant to Judy Garland, and also includes songs by 12th-century mystic Hildegard of Bingen, early American hymns, spirituals, and psalms, and poems of Robert Frost set to her own compositions, all featuring her ethereal voice. Sharing the evening is The Empire Brass, led by trumpeter extraordinaire Rolf Smedvig, who makes his home in these very musical hills.
