James McMurtry at Helsinki Hudson

The hard-driving country rocker James McMurtry earns a lot of attention for his powerful lyrics, which makes you wonder about the impact of genetics; his father is the much-better-known member of the family, the novelist Larry McMurtry. As the Washington Post puts it, “Much attention is paid to James McMurtry’s lyrics, and rightfully so: he creates a novel’s worth of emotion and experience in four minutes of blisteringly stark couplets.” But it’s not all about the words; his guitar-playing is equally powerful and loquacious. He’s won nearly as many honors and nominations as his father, but in the alternate arena of the Americana Music Awards.
