Jay Ungar & Molly Mason Family Band at Club Helsinki

Saturday, December 4 @ 9 p.m.

It’s hard to imagine that anyone in the WAMC listening area needs an explanation of just who Jay Ungar & Molly Mason are, but for those whose radios are tuned elsewhere, this music-making clan is on par and intertwined with those other local musical families, the Seegers and the Guthries. Jay & Molly achieved fame when their performance of Jay’s composition Ashokan Farewell was featured in Ken Burns’ PBS documentary, The Civil War. Beloved hosts of WAMC’s Dancing on the Air musical variety show, Jay & Molly specialize in rootsy 19th & 20th century Americana. Molly’s daughter Ruth followed in mom’s footsteps, teaming up with Mike Merenda (and others, including Tao Rodgrquez-Seeger) to form the folk/rock ensemble The Mammals, from which the duo is now on hiatus as they they promote their recent indie release, Million to One as Mike & Ruthy. In this onstage family gathering, expect a foot-tapping, folky good time with strings plucked, strummed, and bowed accompanying sweet vocal harmonies.
