Music & Dance Intelligence
Nora Chipaumire at Williams College 62 Center
Friday & Saturday, March 4 & 5 @ 8 p.m.
Globe-trotting, award-winning choreographer, director, and performer Nora Chipaumire who studied dance in her native Zimbabwe, Senegal, Cuba, Jamaica, and the United States, and has served as associate artistic director of Urban Bush Women, arrives with her epic work, lions will roar, swans will fly, angels will wrestle heaven, rains will break: gukurahundi, a multimedia piece about loss, grief, displacement, trauma, and confrontation with the ideas that have become associated with Africa: war, violence, backwardness, and suffering, blended with cultural exoticism and the adventure of safari. On a stage alive with dance, music, animation, and striking lighting design, Chipaumire hopes to offer an alternative perspective of a people that can move beyond seeing itself as it is viewed by outsiders and can begin to recognize and act on its strengths. Integral to the piece is live music by the African cultural icon and human rights activist Thomas Mapfumo—The Lion of Zimbabwe—and The Blacks Unlimited.
