The Cantilena Chamber Choir at Trinity Church in Lenox

Sunday, December 5 @ 3 p.m.
Rural Intelligence Arts
Here’s your chance to enjoy music fit for a king, courtesy of the Berkshires’ leading classical a capella group. The Cantilena Chamber Choir and Trinity Church Youth Choir present Christmas at Court, a concert of music written and performed for European and Russian royalty. The program features music by Francisco Guerrero and Thomas Tallis as heard by King Philip of Spain and Mary Tudor of England at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London on Christmas day, 1554, and also includes work by Jean Mouton, the 15th century court composer to King Louis XII of FRance; Heinrich Schutz, the 17th century court composer to the German Elector of Saxony; and Johannes Ockeghem, the 15th century court composer to Charles I, Duke of Bourbon. The Choir will also perform rarely heard music by Dmitry Bortniansky and Anatoly Liadov, written for the Russian Imperial Court Chapel of the 18th and 19th centuries, and the Youth Choir will sing favorite Christmas carols—a few of which were harmonized by J.S. Bach to tunes by Georg Schemelli, 18th century court Kantor at Zeitz, Germany—welcoming audience accompaniment on a few of the more popular songs. Tickets are $20 (free for children). A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Berkshire County Kids Place and Violence Prevention Center.
