The Shanghai Restoration Project at MASS MoCA
Saturday, April 23 @ 8 p.m.
China’s young electronica artists have a showcase in The Shanghai Restoration Project, which debuted as MSN Music’s New Artist of the Week in early 2006 and rose to become the #1 electronic album on the site during the month of January. Produced by Chinese-American Dave Liang—born in Kansas, a jazz pianist in high school, and an Applied Mathemeatics and Economics major at Harvard—TSRP draws its inspiration from the legendary 1930s Shanghai jazz bands that took the then-radical step of blending East and West. Liang revives this storied blend and gives it a state-of-the-art technological dimension by mashing up traditional Eastern instruments and rhythms with the Western sounds of hip-hop and electronica, adding in street noise and striking, vibrant video and animated backdrops by rising-star visual artists. Liang will be mixing it up live in this multimedia extravaganza that’s sure to put a fresh spin on your view of China and its music scene.
