‘Tis a Gift to be Simple

Rural Intelligence Arts
Call it the anti-Tanglewood.  Whereas, everything at Tanglewood is outsized—big audience, big orchestra making big sound, big deal (traffic jams! all that elaborate picnic equipment!)—the Tannery Pond Concerts summer series is simple, intimate, and exquisite.  Since its inception in 1991, it has been held in a building that once was a Shaker tannery, long-since converted to a 290-seat theater on the beautiful grounds of what is now the Darrow School.  It’s difficult to imagine a setting more conducive to listening to high-quality chamber-music performances.

This Friday evening, Tannery Pond presents Beethoven’s three best-known piano trios: Piano Trio No. 1 in E flat major, Opus 1, the Piano Trio in D major, Opus 70, No. 1 (“Ghost”)
and, following a brief intermission, the Piano Trio in B flat major, Opus 97 (“Archduke”). Pianist Wu Han and ‘cellist David Finckel, co-directors of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, will be joined by Da-Hong Seetoo on the violin.

And you get to leave your G-clef-shaped salt-and-pepper shakers at home.
