West African Music and Dance at Vassar
Wednesday, December 1 @ 8 p.m.
Gambian griot Alhaji Papa Susso, a master of the kora— a 21-stringed harp-lute evolved from earlier hunter harps used by the Mandinka people of West Africa and said to be invented by the Susso family—headlines An Evening of West African Music and Dance. Joining him in this free performance are Adjaratou Tapa Demba (vocals/dance), Balla Kouyate (balafon), and Alhassan Susso (kora), who is continuing his family’s legacy into a new generation.
