Winterpills at the Dream Away
Friday, October 29 @ 8:30-ish
They may hail from the Happy Valley, but happiness—at least as most of us know it—doesn’t figure into many songs by Winterpills, which has a retro/ethereal sound, harking back to a band from an earlier time that you just can’t identify. Of the group’s latest release, New York Times music critic Jon Pareles says this: “Devastation grows almost cozy on Tuxedo of Ashes... Philip Price’s cryptic, folky songs hint at floods, murder and war… Winterpills gradually builds elegant arrangements steeped in 1960s folk-pop and rootsy rock, hinting at Simon and Garfunkel and Fairport Convention. While the gathered instruments offer some solace, the songs stay haunted.”
