Dan’s Diary: Facebook 101; Twitter for Beginners
Are you one of those people who sit there dumbfounded when the conversation at dinner turns to Facebook and Twitter? Do you wonder what all the fuss is about? Well, author and editor Gina Hyams was an early adapter and she will be leading a workshop on social-networking sites on April 5 in Housatonic, MA. Hyams was introduced to Facebook while working as the communications director at Berkshire Theatre Festival, where her assistant had set up a Facebook page to keep up with BTF’s young alumni. In the past year, Facebook has become a multigenerational phenomenon and an important part of Hyams’ business and personal lives. “I now have 397 ‘friends’ ranging from high school friends to past coworkers to new friends in the Berkshires,” she says. “It’s the only place where all eras of my life are present, which gives me a great sense of life continuity, plus it’s served to keep me in the mix on a daily basis with editors in New York and California.”
She started “Twittering” last fall and got hooked immediately (she’s posted 1,507 “Tweets” as of this morning.) “I approached the medium with trepidation,” she says. “I was worried I’d become an addict. This concern was well founded. It’s just so fast and smart and fun. The social currency on Twitter is generosity—the more you give, the more you get. Every day the people I ‘follow’ on Twitter teach me things, some of which I had no idea I was interested in and I’ve made new professional acquaintances who have referred work to me. All the hours I’m wasting online are in fact paying off in cold, hard cash, but more than that, with a wonderful sense of connection and possibility.”
