Dan’s Diary: John Andrews’ $25 Prix Fixe Menu

Rural Intelligence BlogsIf all politics are local, then all dining decisions are personal, especially these days. You want to support those restaurateurs who over the years have faithfully delivered good food and service and help them weather the economic storm. The smart ones, like Dan Smith (right), the chef/owner of John Andrews in Egremont, know that many of us need an incentive to dine out right now, so Smith is offering a three-course prix-fixe for $25 every night of the week (along with his regular menu and his moderately priced bar menu.) Smith is one of those chefs who care deeply about every plate of food that leaves his kitchen, and loves to layer flavors in every dish. Last night, I started with a rich, chicken liver-and-almond pâté with shallot-bacon marmalade on Tuscan bread;  my main course was spaghetti “Puttanesca” with mussels, braised tuna and olives; dessert was a hefty and refreshing slice of rosemary olive-oil cake with oranges and whipped cream. I drove home, on the nearly deserted roads, very, very happy.
