Dan’s Diary: Passing the Sword at Shakespeare & Company

Rural Intelligence BlogsAfter a year-long search, Shakespeare & Company has chosen a new artistic director to succeed founder Tina Packer.  On June 1, Tony Simotes, who was one of the original founders of S&Co in 1978, will take over the day-to-day running of the company, so Packer can focus on long-term projects and planning.  He will be leaving his current job as a tenured professor at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Over the last decade, he has returned to Lenox often and directed several plays at S&Co, including The Merry Wives of Windsor in 2006 and Othello in 2008. Simotes is a nationally recognized and professionally accredited fight director and choreographer, and he taught students at the University of Wisconsin how to use knives, swords, broadswords and rapiers (as he demonstrates in the photo.)
