Dan’s Diary: Reversal of Fortune at Shakespeare & Company

Rural Intelligence Blogs Two weeks after RI reported how an ebullient Tina Packer announced a jam-packed season for Shakespeare & Company, the Lenox theater troupe issued a press release today announcing major cost-cutting measures, including seven layoffs and a ten percent wage reduction for all year-round employees.  It’s impossible to know if S&Co’s fortunes changed dramatically in the past days or if the reality of the economic situation just finally hit home.  It’s certain that S&Co has lost some big supporters; after all, troubled AIG was a major sponsor of the last two seasons with prime ads in the playbills.  Here’s today’s
press release so you can try to read the tea leaves yourself. But what seems quite clear is that the creative minds at S&Co are determined to make this summer as vibrant, relevant and entertaining as ever.
