Dan’s Diary: Shalom, Ellen Carton!
You probably don’t too know much about the Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center in Falls Village, which might be described as a kosher Kripalu or an Omega for progressive Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Renewal Jews. But you’ll probably be hearing more about Isabella Freedman—whose pickles and sauerkraut are sold at some of our region’s best food stores—now that a high-powered executive director has been hired to run the 400 acre camp, which started out as summer vacation spot for garment workers and is now a year-round multi-denominational retreat center. Ellen Carton, who has served as executive director of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and the National Abortion Rights Action League/New York (NARAL), takes over as executive director on March 23.
