Dan’s Diary: Totally Delicious

Rural Intelligence FoodThere used to be a newspaper maxim that three of anything makes a trend story. The rule of three applies to restaurants too: If you order the same dish three times and it is consistently delicious (which isn’t as easy as it sounds because it competes with memory on each subsequent visit) then you can unequivocally recommend it to your friends. Thus, I dare to say that The Most Delicious Thing I Ate in 2008 was the Vietnamese Crepe (Banh Xeo) at Pho Saigon in Lee, and I will be indebted forever to Paige Orloff for introducing it to me. (I am also grateful to Paige for telling me to order the tea with lime and honey, which I now duplicate at home.) The rice-powder crepe is an appetizer that can be shared by three, and it’s stuffed with pork, shrimp, bean sprouts coconut and scallions. Served with a side plate of fresh lettuce, mint, basil and homemade sauce, it’s sweet and salty, hearty and healthy, unctuous and unforgettable.
