Dan’s Diary: The Breakfast Classic
When I lived in New York, my favorite breakfast was not a bagel with cream cheese nor some gargantuan ten-grain muffin. It was the bacon-egg-and-cheese sandwich that you can find at nearly every bodega and corner deli. It’s usually priced around $2 and it provides enough calories to get you through an entire day. It’s hard to find a restaurant that makes a really great bacon-egg-and-cheese sandwich because they don’t use good hard rolls and they don’t wrap them in wax paper which melds all the ingredients together. I used to plan visits back to the city around being able to get a take-out breakfast from a deli. And then I discovered the Wandering Moose in West Cornwall. Owner Russ Sawicki has a picturesque location and a deft hand when it comes to assembling a breakfast sandwich—the bacon is crispy, the egg is runny and the roll is crusty. It’‘ll cost you $4.95, but that’s cheap for perfection on a plate.
