“China Today” Lecture at Monument Mountain High School

Rural Intelligence: Community: Community Image

Dr. Minxin Pei

Do we hold the key to our future or do the Chinese?  We might find the answer on Wednesday, February 4, when Minxin Pei lectures on “China Today” at Monument Mountain High School in Great Barrington.  Dr. Pei, director of the China Program at the Carnegie Endowmment for International Peace, is the author of China’s Trapped Transition: The Limits of Developmental Autocracy. Pei argues that China’s future is uncertain despite its economic progress, because progress toward a more modern economy will require the establishment of a true rule of law, which is incompatible with the party’s insistence on dominating society.

The lecture is part of the prestigious Dowmel Foundation series, which is free but you have to make an effort to get the tickets which are distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.  They will be distributed on Friday, January 23, at the Berkshire Museum at 8 AM (doors open at 7 AM) and Saturday, January 24, at Monument Mountain Regional High School at 8:30 AM (doors open at 7 AM). The lecture is not open to children under 14.
