The Inauguration: The Next Best Thing to Being There
On January 20, 2009, three million people—no wait, make that five million people, or is it ten million? Anyway, as many people as can possibly squeeze in are expected to turn up in Washington, D.C. to bear witness as President-Elect Barack Obama becomes the 44th President of the United States. Those of us who cannot be there may be feeling a tad dejected, as if we are missing both history-in-the-making and the party of the century. Well, neighbors, sulk no more.
Thanks to the closed-circuit capabilities of the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington, we, too, can celebrate as a community, instead of sitting at home, watching t.v. alone. In collaboration with WMHT and WGBY Public Television, the Mahaiwe is inviting the entire community (or as many as can possibly squeeze in) to watch a live feed of the inauguration, starting at 11 a.m.
“We are thrilled that our audience members can share such momentous occasions together,” says Beryl Jolly, Executive Director of the Mahaiwe. “We also hope to welcome schoolchildren.”
This is one hot ticket, made sizzling by the fact that it is also free. If you think you’d like to be there, our advice: Do not keep your options open; reserve at once.
