Millerton Card & Candy, the whimsical Dutchess County sweet shop that is always filled with surprises like these Easter basket tchotchkes, is planning to open a branch on Main Street in Great Barrington, MA. “I’ve wanted to expand for the longest time,” says Robin Helfand, who has been running a gourmet emporium, Millerton Market, for nearly four years on Millerton’s gentrifying Main Street. “One my suppliers, who knew that I wanted to expand, called me at home on a Saturday morning when he read in the Berkshire Eagle that White Knight Records was going out of businessmen,” she says. “Two hours later, I tracked down the owner of the building who was in Mexico,” says Helfand. “Two days later, I was in his office. Two weeks later, I signed a lease.” Helfand sees similarities between Millerton and Great Barrington. “It’s good to be in a town with a movie theater, which brings people in,” she says. Helfand hopes her latest venture, which will sell old-fashioned candies and chocolates from several local artisans, will be ready to open by Memorial Day weekend.
