Couldn’t even get in the door. Made a reservation 3 weeks in advance, called to confirm and they said they had no record of my Friday reservation for 6 to celebrate an anniversary. They did have a reservation for 7 and wanted to know if that was me! Not unless I changed my name. They said the manager would call me back but after 2 hours I called her and she was not available so I made a reservation for another restaurant. I finally connected with the manager/owner who assured me that their small restaurant could accomodate 2 large parties and tried to imply that I had made the reservation for Saturday not Friday - not likely for my wedding anniversary - my husband maybe, me no . The whole deal left me with a bad taste in my mouth before eating one bite so I cancelled and the manager/owner got a little snippy with me. Nice way to treat customers in a new restaurant although the manager/owner said the restaurant was not new - it’s been open for 2 1/2 months!!

Who wouldn’t want a neighboorhood restaurant this good? Chef/owner Wes Dier buys his ingredients from as many local farms and purveyors as possible, but the primary reason he named his new restaurant The Local was because he wanted it to be a neighborhood hangout. Nevertheless, The Local is a restaurant worth going out of your way to visit because it marries sophisticated cooking in a laid-back, friendly setting. The eclectic menu offers choices ranging from Hudson Valley foie gras ($20) and Stone Church Farm duck ($26) to a Cuban-style crepe ($15) made with Meiller’s Farm pork belly and extraordinary sliders ($14) made with Sepascot Home Farm grass-fed beef. With an open kitchen just inside the front door, you can watch your dinner being prepared, and if there’s a wait (we advise making reservations) there’s a bartender who knows how to mix extraordinary cocktails such as a Pink Salty Dog. —Dan Shaw
