The field at North Plain Farm in Great Barrington on September 4
If you love good food and want to meet more of your neighbors in the Rural Intelligence region, you might want to attend the North Plain Farm 6th Annual Pig Roast on Saturday, September 12, in Great Barrington, and the Berkshire Grown Harvest Dinner on Monday, September 21, at the Eastover Resort in Lenox. Both events are celebrations of locally grown and raised food prepared by the best chefs in our region. The Pig Roast is organized by the Stanton brothers, and if you saw our photos of Emily and Jeremy Stanton’s locavore cookout a few weeks ago and wished you’d been there, this is a more affordable, egalitarian, down-and-dirty version of that party. Jeremy is a genius when it comes to cooking over fire, and he knows how to roast a pig on a spit to perfection.
The 11th annual Berkshire Grown Harvest Supper is spectacular smorgasbord that showcases the farm-to-table movement that Berkshire Grown champions. The participating restaurants, which offer up dishes made with locally grown and raised food, include Allium, Baba Louie’s, Bistro Zinc, Gramercy Tavern, John Andrews, Old Inn on the Green, Pittsfield Brew Works, Red Lion Inn and Route 7 Grill. This may be the party’s last year at Eastover’s spectacular barn, for the resort is scheduled to shut down later this fall. If you believe in the locavore life, the Harvest Supper is a wonderful opportunity to put your money where your mouth is and to mingle with chefs and farmers.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, September 12, over in Columbia County, The Taste of Hudson, a street fair featuring tastings from local restaurants and select caterers, will be held, rain or shine, on the 200 block of Warren. BeLo 3rd, an organization of business owners dedicated to drawing traffic to this quieter end of Warren Street, are behind this one. “We’ll have two big tents, with 16 restaurants from all over Hudson participating,” says Kevin Moran, owner of (p.m.) wine bar. “We’ll be selling BeLo Bucks so the vendors don’t have to hassle with cash. I’m doing meatballs [$1 BeLo Buck] and pesto shrimp [$3 BeLo Bucks].” Sounds like $20 worth of BeLo Bucks will buy a lot of very good food.
