Get there early, because, even if there is still dew on the grass, once they’ve served their 900th (!) plate of blueberry pancakes, the flapjack flippers from the Austerlitz (NY) Fire Department switch into lunch (mixed grill) mode. This Sunday, The Austerlitz Historical Society presents its 10th Annual Blueberry Festival on the grounds of Old Austerlitz, an historic church and schoolhouse on Route 22. Meanwhile, right around the corner (it’s actually 8 miles away, but,by local standards, that’s virtually next door), the hamlet of North Egremont, MA is hosting Egremont on Parade, sometimes called, The Taste of Egremont, due to the popularity of that particular tent. For anyone up for a little (seriously) old-fashioned family fun, these two events, jointly or separately, promise to provide a very full—and filling—day.
Not that these events are solely about food. The Austerlitz Historical Sociiety promises juggling and buffoonery, animal acts, and traditional music, as well as vendors from Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York exhibiting and selling early 19th-Century crafts, antique dealers and assorted other vendors. Last year, it was enough to keep 2,000 attendees thoroughly amused.
But somehow food is the tie that binds, as it is at the Egremont event, where the “Taste of Egremont” tent (above), featuring fare from local restaurants, is a big draw. There’s also a farmer’s market, so even as you and yours are whooping it up, you can get your errands done.
