On the Farm: Membership Has Its Privileges at a CSA

Rural Intelligence Food Section Image

Indian Line Farm in South Egremont, photographed by Jason Houston

Eating locally grown food is valuable on so many levels—ecologically, economically, nutritionally, sociologically, spiritually—that it’s no wonder many CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farms in our region report that new and returning members are signing up earlier this year and that waiting lists to join are inevitable. (Last year by April 1, many CSAs were filled for the season.) Convenience is key when picking a farm, because you want make sure you can make your weekly pick up. All CSAs offer vegetables, of course, and some offer fruits as well as flowers (and many sell local eggs, beef and cheese, too, at the pick-up location.) Some crops are pick-your-own, and the last few summers at Chubby Bunny Farm, my CSA in Falls Village, I’ve had wonderful conversations with neighbors I’d never talked to before as I picked cherry tomatoes, peas and raspberries. If you’re a serious summer cook, you might consider joining two different CSAs to fully experience the bounty of summer in the Rural Intelligence region.

“CSAs are more popular than ever,” says Barbara Zheutlin, executive director of Berkshire Grown, which coordinates the Share the Bounty program which connects CSAs with food pantries and soup kitchens. “I believe Caretaker already has a waiting list. River Valley Farm is coming back and Markcristo in will have a CSA for the first time too, but the information is not yet on its website.  Wolfe Spring Farm in Sheffield is planning a CSA, too.”  Laura Meister, who’s in her fifth year or running Farm Girl Farm , says the interest is greater than ever. “I have twice as many members signed up as I did last year at this time,” she says.

If we’ve left out a CSA farm in our region that is still selling shares, please let us know in the Comment section.
