Raise a Glass To Food Writing! May It Long Endure

Long, long before there was a Julie and long before we knew there was a Julia, M.F.K. Fisher, of whom Auden once said, “I do not know of any one in the United States who writes better prose,” broke through the gender barrier to write about food. Before Fisher, women had written recipes and kitchen advice, but the exalted occupation of writing philosophically about the pleasures of the table was the province of men. With sentences like the one above and thousands more nearly as good, Fisher made the world safe for the mostly female group of acclaimed food writers and critics who will assemble next Saturday, October 3 at the Mount for a panel discussion on the future of their art.
The panel, which will be moderated by New York Times Magazine editor and writer Christine Muhlke, will include Julia Child’s former editor, the cookbook author Judith Jones; Eater.com editor Amanda Kludt, and Amanda Hesser, Kim Severson and Oliver Strand, all of the Times. Afterwards, on The Mount’s Terrace, Great Barrington cheesemonger Matthew Rubiner will host a complimentary tasting of local and regional cheeses and charcuterie, ingeniously paired with a selection of local hard cider and craft beers.
