Bangall Whaling Company - Bangall, New York

Rural Intelligence FoodEvery neighborhood needs a casual saloon, and the Bangall Whaling Company (across the road from the wonderful Red Devon) has filled a void in the pastorale heart of the Hudson Valley. You enter into a lounge area with a fireplace, and you can see the sports-watching bar crowd through the French doors on your left. To your right, there’s a handsome, high-ceilinged dining room with antique beams and plenty of space between tables.  The menu is priced to be comforting day or night with main course salads ($10) such as Southwestern pulled chicken salad (iceberg lettuce, avocado, corn, black beans, pico de gallo and chipotle dressing) and pecan-crusted chicken salad (mixed greens, oranges, dried cranberries, cherry tomatoes, balsamic onions, gorgonzola and honey truffle vinaigrette.)  Sandwiches—hamburgers ($9), Ahi tuna club ($11), grilled vegetable panini ($8)— come with a choice of salad or excellent crispy French fries. If you’re just in the mood for something to munch while having a beer, you can’t go wrong with a basket of the sweet potato fries ($5). —Dan Shaw
