The Red Barn - Ghent, New York
On Friday and Saturday nights, Dr. Bert Goldfinger switches from a dentist’s smock to chef’s whites and clogs to man the stove at The Red Barn, while his wife Christine Jones, a former advertising executive, bakes desserts, makes ice cream, and oversees the front of the house. For decades this location and name belonged to a luncheonette/homemade ice cream parlor. Under the present owners, The Red Barn has managed to gain a pound of splendor, without sacrificing an ounce of homey-ness. The menu features enlightened versions of American classics, including crispy fried chicken ($13.50), a great burger ($9.75), a “Country Club Wedge” (iceberg lettuce with bacon and blue cheese dressing @ $7.85), and a luxurious version of a lobster roll ($24). Much of the food is raised and/or grown by their farming neighbors and even grow some of it themselves on a 1/2 acre plot at their nearby home.
