Free Day of Fun at MassMoCA

January 29 @ 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Rural Intelligence Kids
Join Mass MoCA for the annual Free Day, which, obviously, offers free admission plus a host of activities all day long. There will be gallery tours every half hour from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., a big sale at Hardware: The MASS MoCA Store and free photo booth. Visitors can also create their own sculpture with the materials used by the artists of Material World, reinterpret Sol LeWitt wall drawings as community art projects, get a henna tattoo, watch several dance demos, listen to music as part of the Elevator Music Festival, and enjoy complimentary slices of Lickety Split’s signature carrot cake.

Specifically for the kids, Kidspace will be open free of charge with art-making activities from noon until 5 p.m. Also on view is Portia Munson’s Color Forms I, which focuses on how the colors pink and blue help to shape and reinforce gender roles.

Hang around until 8 p.m. and you can catch the rollicking Bhangra Funk Dance Party with Red Baraat. The Indian-rooted band was founded in 2008 by Sunny Jain, who was raised in Rochester, N.Y. by Punjabi immigrant parents. The nine members of Red Baraat draw from a multitude of musical traditions, marrying percussion and brass for a sound that incorporates funk, jazz, rock, hip-hop, go-go, Brazilian, Punjabi singing, and of course, North Indian Bhangra. Kids are free but there is a charge for adults.
