Kids Go Nuts for “The Nutcracker”

Rural Intelligence Kids Once upon a time, you had to live in or visit a big city to see a performance of The Nutcracker in a grand theater. But country kids and their parents have several opportunities to see Tchaikovsky's beloved ballet in Berkshire, Columbia, Dutchess and Litchfield Coutnies. The Albany Berkshire Ballet's version is choreographed by Madeline Cantarella Culpo, who founded the company, an outgrowth of Pittsfield's Cantarella School of Dance, in 1960. This year, there are new sets by Carl Sprague of Stockbridge, who frequently works for theaters in the Berkshires as well as on Hollywood films like The Royal Tenenbaums and State & Main. (The above photograph of the Albany Berkshire Ballet's 2000 Nutcracker is by Kevin Sprague.)

The Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts will present its Nutcracker (in both Torrington and Hartford) with 30 dancing roles for the Nutmeg Professional Trainees and some 50 cameo roles for children. The professional students in this year’s production are working on their corps de ballet training with Victoria Mazzarelli who is setting a brand new “Land of the Snow”. Eleanor D’Antuono is setting the “Waltz of the Flowers”, Susan Szabo is staging the “Battle of the Mice and Soldiers”, and Joan Kunsch is staging the opening prologue with the youngest dancers. And the New Paltz Ballet Theater will have both morning and evening performances of its Nutcracker at the Bardavon in Poughkeepsie.
