A Garden Party at Chesterwood

Rural Intelligence Parties and OpeningsThere is no finer spot for a garden party than Chesterwood, the National Trust Historic Site in Stockbridge, which was the country home and studio of Daniel Chester French (1850-1931), the sculptor of the statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Memorial in Washington, DC, and The Minute Man, Concord, MA. The evening was not just the usual cocktail chit-chat. There were insightful talks by biographer Harold Holzer, co-chairman of the U.S. Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, who spoke on “The Depiction of Abraham Lincoln During His Lifetime,” and by Chas Fagan, a painter and sculptor who spoke on “The Iconic Representation of Abraham Lincoln After His Death.” Afterwards, several guests toured the grounds and the summer’s Space is the Place contemporary sculpture exhibition, which was curated by Denise Markonish of MASS MoCA.
