A Colonial Thanksgiving with Bidwell House Museum

Fiona Breslin reports from Monterey.
Guests walked a quiet, candlelit path towards the Bidwell House Museum, Saturday, November 24, for the New England heritage landmark’s Colonial Holiday Thanksgiving Fundraising Party. The event was held in the enchanting 1750s parlors of former house resident, Reverend Adonijah Bidwell, with evening proceeds going to benefit the museum and its mission to promote history, research, education, and restoration of colonial life in Western Massachusetts. With no cell service and tons of guests joyfully mingling in the dimly lit, small wooden rooms, it was easy to imagine a little bit of life in the 18th century. There were smiles on the faces of everyone (including museum director Barbara Palmer, pictured above with board president Robert Hoogs, who came dressed for the occasion) as conversation, light hors d’ouevres, refreshments, and upbeat music by local string musican, David Reed, took place. A silent auction featuring gifts such as glass blowing lessons from Hoogs & Crawford, a private yoga session, guitar lessons, and more, were also on display to help further encourage Bidwell House support. The simple and lovely benefit took place just days after Thanksgiving. I felt reminded upon arrival of why I am thankful to live in the beautiful and historic region that we do.
