Everyone Plays at Tanglewood on Parade
It’s not a day at the beach, but people come to Tanglewood as if it were. Besides packing elaborate picnics, they brings all manner of folding furniture as well as novels, crossword puzzles, cards and board games to pass the time. Tuesday night’s annual Tanglewood on Parade was a day of music that began at 2 PM and ended after 10 PM with the 1812 Overture and fireworks. In between, there were performances in the Koussevitzky Music Shed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra and the Boston Pops Orchestra, which were led variously by Hans Graf, Sir Andrew Davis, Keith Lockhart, John Williams, and André Previn.
Bernie Re and Joey Jablonski carted their picnic in a vitnage wagon. Like all old Tanglewood hands, they brought a plastic tarp because after dark the ground gets dewy and regular blankets get damp.
Craig Perrier and Amy Gilvary played Scrabble before the concert.
Robin &Jody Curry played Gin Rummy; Karen Lurie, Wendy Tirck and Sandy Tobias played mahjongg with a camera-shy friend.
Carolyn & Ed Milke played a new card gamed called “Ulcers,” with Dru & Ray McNeil.
Lygeia Grace with Bellamy & Bill Crozier; Alyssa Bates and Alice Larkin.
Sascha Shutkind with her 15-year-old daughter, Samara, the Cupcake Queen.
As the concert began, one child with well-prepared parents lay down for a nap.
