Toasting “Woodland Style” at Berkshire Museum

Rural Intelligence Parties and OpeningsCultural correspondent Bess J.M. Hochstein reports from Pittsfield: Artists, home décor devotees, and other friends and fans of Marlene Marshall converged on Berkshire Museum on Saturday, September 25, for her book signing. An artist, art teacher, and author, Marshall’s latest book, Woodland Style, was released recently by Storey Publishing. This exploration of artists and home designers who use elements from nature in their work was also the springboard for a new exhibition of the same name that she curated at Berkshire Museum, which sprouted this month in the lobby and spreads up the grand stairway, and will grow into the gateway for the museum’s annual Festival of Trees—themed Storybook Forest —in November. The artists included in the initial phase of Woodland Style are based in or near the Berkshires, making this a locavore show, a theme reflected in the hors d’oeuvres supplied by Dottie’s that were inspired by recipes in the book such as Jerusalem artichoke latkes with apple sauce and petit wild mushroom tartlets, which were accompanied, naturally, by organic wines.
