The Old Treasures of New Concord

There’s a lot to be said for the New Concord (Columbia County) tour this Saturday: twenty exceptional late 18th- and early 19th-century houses and/or their gardens, including the Hosea Bebe house (above), all in one tiny hamlet so, instead of spending the day climbing in and out of a car and wreaking havoc on the environment, you get to park and WALK from place to place. Oh and what enchanting places they are.  New Concord is one of those hamlets that give New England its good name.  (Okay, so the town is in New York State, but it has that look: one perfect house after another, most of them white and apparently painted yesterday.)  Here’s a question: how come our forefathers couldn’t design an ugly house?  Whereas, we….
