Okay, let’s get the only bad aspect of this over right at the start. This is the 3rd weekend in August, which means the Annual Rhinebeck Sidewalk Sale is upon us, heralding the end of a summer season that feels as if it has just begun.
Now, promise, not another whimper about the weather (or the economy, or those savage “town hall meetings”). We’ve got bargains to look forward to this weekend. So buck up: Nice weather, a charming, historic village to stroll through, and three days of music, art, and great merchandise on sale.

Carol Neiley, owner of Basic French, the late, lamented shop in Red Hook, has closed her store, sold her house, and is moving to France full-time, although her products will still be available on the Basic French website . On Friday and Saturday, she is selling all the wonderful French things she has lived with for the last sixteen years—vintage linens, upholstered day bed and chairs, mirrors, ironstone, primitive cupboards, vintage garden urns and furniture, etc.

For good reason hundreds flock to Rhinebeck each year for this event. According to Maureen Missner, co-owner of Paper Trail, a store there, “All year, the Rhinebeck merchants get a lot of strong support from the community; this is our chance to give something back. Besides, it’s festive. What’s great about Rhinebeck? It’s a walking village. The Sidewalk Sale is like a big outdoor fair.”
“Merchants display their finest wares along the streets and offer the best deals of the summer to entice locals and visitors alike to the Jewel of the Hudson Valley,” says Barbara Schreiber, owner of the Rhinebeck Department Store, betraying no hometown chauvinism whatsoever.
“The first time we came to Rhinebeck was during a Sidewalk Sale,” says Lila Pague. “To me, it was amazing to have all the merchants out on the sidewalk and everyone so friendly. It gave us a real sense of community. We enjoyed stolling up and down the beautiful tree-lined streets. That’s when we decided we wanted to live here.”
Today, Lila and Steven Pague own Winter Sun and Summer Moon, a shop that features clothing, gifts, jewelry, and home accessories from around the world. At the sale, Lila says, “We’ll put out some Eileen Fisher, some Luna Luz, some Dansko shoes, Wolky—we go 50, 60, 70% off. We’re not interested in bringing any of it back inside.”
Paper Trail will be offering big discounts on seasonal merchandise. “We have one fabulous citronella torch leftover from 4th of July,” Maureen Missner says. “It looks like a Venetian torch for a Gondola. We’ll offer it, along with a lot of other seasonal and just-one-left items—parasols, silver candles, a whole set of adorable hors d’oeuvres plates, some slightly damaged books— at 50% off.”
This year, for the first time, an outdoor art show has been added to the event. Rhinebeck merchants have teamed up with the new Gazen Gallery for, Art in Rhinebeck. “Hudson Valley artists will set up tables and easels to display and sell their work all around the village,” says gallery owner Linda Gazen Weisbrod.
