Cedar Heights Orchard in Dutchess County on Open Days Tour

Rural Intelligence Style
Garden Conservancy Open Days are drawing to a close for the season.  On Saturday, September 13, there is just one in our region, Cedar Heights Orchard, William and Arvia Morris’ large property in Rhinebeck, New York. After a major storm twelve years ago, the Morris’ created a “wild” garden from the debris with many ponds, shrubs and willows.  The gardens near the house, pool, and barn have been designed for bloom and color from March to November. Old specimen trees and stone walls give structure, as does a dark house in a rustic style that was added in 2007.  A vegetable and cutting garden recently has been greatly enlarged.  The orchard hillside faces west with views to the Catskills, and the apples are rumored to be ripe for picking.
