Gardening: Open Days Are Here Again
This weekend the Garden Conservancy‘s annual Open Days tours begin in our region with just two properties, Maxine Paetro’s little fantasyland, Broccoli Hall, in Amenia, and Anne Spiegel’s dramatic natural rock garden in Wappinger’s Falls. Admission is $5 per person, per garden (cash or check). For directions, please visit the Conservancy’s website.
Confronted with rugged stepped ledges leading up to a sheer rock cliff, Anne Spiegel has created extensive screes, sand beds, lime beds, raised bed, and, at the top of the cliff, new crevice gardens. The setting is open, windy, sun-baked, and, thanks to an inadequate well, never watered.. Yet through continual experimentation with drought-tolerant plants from Turkey, as well as our own Great Basin and western mountains, Spiegel has made the site many would have written off as hopeless seem like a great opportunity.

Broccoli Hall is one of the region’s not-to-be-missed gardens. Maxine Paetro, collaborating with horticulturist Tim Steinhoff, has created a series of enchanting garden rooms—an apple tunnel, a brick courtyard, a lavish display of spring bulbs blooming with crabapples in May, an extensive border of iris, peonies, and old shrub roses flowering in June, a tree house with long views, and a secret woodland garden with a teddy bears’ picnic.
