Historic Hudson House Tour: At Home with History
Six intriguing Hudson houses, once derelict now brought back to vibrant life, promise to make for a fascinating tour this Saturday to benefit Historic Hudson, an advocacy group devoted to preserving the cultural and architectural heritage of the city.
Each of the properties, which are all within walking distance of one another, illustrates a different way of marrying contemporary living with historic architecture without compromising either. One owner opened up a Second Empire structure (above) by adding spectacular indoor-outdoor spaces—an enclosed porch and a glass conservatory—that gracefully blend with what was already there. Another chose colors for a Warren Street townhouse (bottom photo)—starting with the striking turquoise front door—that allude tangentially to the vibrant colors favored during certain epics within the Victorian era, but are more directly allied to this owner’s collection of Islamic exotica. Another of the properties (below) was originally a multi-family dwelling called Haviland House. Today, it is a repository for the eclectic accumulations of its owner, a set designer and prop stylist and is featured in the current issue of House Beautiful..
On Saturday evening, following the tour, there will be a benefit cocktail party, featuring fall-inspired treats from Chef Jeff Loshinsky, in another exciting interior: the quirky and extravagant “Tin Ballroom” above the incomparable Vince Mulford Antiques.
