Artists, art lovers, and art historians gathered on Thursday, September 26, as MASS MoCA held an opening reception for its new Anselm Kiefer exhibit in its refurbished Building 15. The new/old building contains three separate Kiefer works: Étroits sont les Vaisseaux (Narrow are the Vessels), an undulating concrete sculpture inspired by the Saint-John Perse poem of the same name; Velimir Chlebnikov, a series of 30 nautical-themed paintings named for the Russian Futurist poet and housed in its own metal pavilion inside Building 15; and Les Femmes de la Revolution (The Women of the Revolution), a room of lead beds with hollowed-out centers containing water and/or assorted solids, and honoring woman heroines of the French Revolution. The entire exhibit is on a 15-year loan from the Hall Art Foundation, and everything from the reclamation of the building to the maintenance and security costs is being covered by the Foundation.
