Kristin Worrall Cooks Up A Show At Standard Space
Combine one part theater piece and one part cooking show, add an audience and you’ve got The Recipe, a live performance by Kristin Worrall in which she prepares and serves a dessert to the crowd.
Worrall, a Brooklyn-based sound designer, drummer in the band Cushions, and professional pastry chef, will be bringing The Recipe to Standard Space in Sharon, Connecticut for two 8 p.m. shows on Friday, Jan. 25 and Saturday, Jan. 26.
In this episode, audiences can expect to learn how to make apple strudel, as well as learn a little about the history of the dessert, and a little about Worrall herself.
“It’s funny because I make pastry but I don’t really have a sweet tooth,” she says, “but I enjoy making things for people. People don’t really need dessert but it makes them happy.” In her eyes, the live performances are an opportunity to come together, to commune in a room together and “break bread” and have a conversation. “I’m trying to reach out in some way through food.”
Worrell has a theatrical backyard in sound, which morphed into performing with The Nature Theatre of Oklahoma and touring with them around the world. After the company dissolved, Worrall went to pastry school and expected to become a pastry chef, but missed performing. With her live cooking shows, she fuses together two of her great loves.
“There’s always a chance for failure and a chance for surprise, and some of things I talk about aren’t necessarily the normal, boring things,” Worrall says. “I talk about death and drugs and sex and it might veer into some dark territory. There’s some humor in it. It’s really my favorite thing to do. It’s meant to be a very sensual experience.”
