May 24, through October 24 | Lenox, MA

The Mount, Edith Wharton's 49-acre estate on Plunkett Street in Lenox, opens its annual outdoor sculpture exhibition on May 24 with "Flourish," a show organized around themes of growth, resilience, connection, and the ways communities come together and thrive. The exhibition runs through October 24 and is free and open to the public throughout the season.

Sculpture at The Mount places large-scale works throughout the property's woods, gardens, and open vistas, transforming the landscape into an open-air gallery. Free guided sculpture tours are available on select dates; self-guided visits are possible any time during garden hours.

Wharton designed the house and grounds herself beginning in 1901, drawing on the principles she laid out in her 1897 book The Decoration of Houses, which she co-wrote with architect Ogden Codman Jr. The formal gardens were inspired by the great gardens of England and Italy that Wharton studied on her many trips abroad. She lived here until 1911, writing The House of Mirth and Ethan Frome in the upstairs study while the estate took shape around her.

The house itself is open for guided tours Tuesday through Sunday at regular intervals, and garden tours run daily at 1pm. House tours are $22 for adults and free for members and visitors 18 and under. The sculpture exhibition is entirely separate from the house tour and free to walk on its own.
