Hubby Jenkins plays the Guthrie Center on June 13. Jenkins is a Brooklyn-born multi-instrumentalist who first came to national attention as a core member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, the Grammy Award-winning string band that spent a decade reclaiming and reanimating the Black string band tradition. His banjo, fiddle, and guitar work was central to the group's sound, but his solo career has taken the historical mission even further.
His shows are part performance and part deep history lesson, moving through spirituals, ragtime, early blues, and folk with storytelling that makes the music's African-American roots explicit and visceral. In June 2024 he appeared at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville for the release of a landmark recording documenting Black contributions to country music, and was subsequently invited to perform on the Grand Ole Opry. In May 2025 he performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. He brings the same combination of warmth, scholarship, and virtuosity to a room of 50 that he does to a festival crowd.
The Guthrie Center, 2 Van Deusenville Rd., Great Barrington, MA. Tickets at guthriecenter.org.
