Kindness, care, and compassion were all on display at The Lily Pond Sanctuary in Ghent on Saturday, June 3. Its Earth Day celebration was a fundraiser for the horses, cats, and dogs (52 animals all told) that are now safely ensconced in their forever home. Susan Bandy, who founded the sanctuary in 2015, led guests through a barn and paddock tour, introducing the horses and their back stories, many horrific but ultimately ending with happy tales. “We provide quality care and a lifetime home for senior, special needs cases — animals nobody else wants,” Bandy said. “We get calls to take in horses every day.” After meeting (and feeding peppermints to) the horses, guests regrouped under a tent for hors d’oeuvres and drinks, and a vegetarian dinner. A silent auction and raffle prizes included sessions with an animal communicator and themed baskets of goodies.
